The Seminary’s 260-acre Main Campus, situated on a Hudson River site, boasts the Massena Mansion in addition to its circa 1890 barn. Used by the Seminary for storage, it was once the center of a prosperous farm with wheat, field crops, sheep and dairy cows. It is a “bank barn” with the second level accessible to cattle from a built-up bank ramp. It has a beautiful brick silo with a slate roof and ornate brackets under the barn’s eves.
The Winnakee Land Trust has protected several thousand acres of farmland, woodland and open space in northern Dutchess County and established parks and trails for public access. UTS partnered with the Winnakee Land Trust and the Town of Red Hook in 2007 to designate “Father’s Trail” on campus as a “Greenway Heritage Trail,” part of a network of multi-use trails envisioned to extend along the Hudson River from north of Albany to Manhattan.
The Massena Estate barn on the UTS main campus was one of seven barns featured on this year’s tour.
