The HJI Master of Arts in Peace Studies is a 42-credit graduate degree program that is available fully online. By taking two courses each term and during the summer, students can complete the program in two and a half years. Students are only accepted in this program in the fall of each academic year. The program provides students with the knowledge and skills needed by peace professionals. It dedicates particular attention to the study of conflict analysis and transformation and pays special attention to the impact of religion and culture on intra-state and inter-state relations. The program is designed for individuals who intend to pursue careers in public service through intergovernmental organizations, government agencies and non-governmental organizations. The faculty and staff in the program work collaboratively with the Universal Peace Federation, a Unification-related NGO with more than 120 national chapters, which holds general consultative status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations.

Throughout the Master of Arts in Peace Studies course of study, the following program objectives are emphasized:

  1. Education in the theory and practice of conflict transformation for public leadership.
  2. Education in the religious dimension of peace and conflict transformation, including the peace teachings and practices of Unificationism.
  3. Capacity-building through theoretical courses and a hands-on internship of experientially grounded peace professionals.

Graduation Requirements

To be awarded the M.A. in Peace Studies degree, students must fulfill the following requirements:

  • 42 credit hours
  • A minimum grade point average of 2.50
  • Mid‑Program Review
  • Comprehensive Exam (written and oral)

All students must complete the following required courses:

  • MGT 5101 Conflict Analysis and Transformation 3 Credits
  • PST 5141 Diplomacy and Faith-based Diplomacy 3 Credits
  • SCR 5151 World Scripture and World Peace
  • PST 5143 Unification Approaches to Peace 3 Credits
  • PST 5151 Research Methods and Analysis in the Social Sciences 3 Credits
  • PST 5152 Formation and Self-care for Peace Professionals 3 Credits
  • PST 5190 Internship 6 Credits

In addition, the students choose four electives from the following courses:

  • Unification of the Korean Peninsula
  • Trauma and Healing
  • Ethics and Social Justice
  • World Religions and Global Conflict
  • Ecumenism and Interfaith
  • Divine Principle in Depth
  • Marriage, Family and Human Development
  • Thesis (optional)
