Alum Spotlight – Mary Marshall-Moriarty

What inspired you to apply to HJI and your program? What do you most appreciate about being a student at HJI?
I was working with the FFWPU in Atlanta Georgia, prior to 1994 and felt it would be beneficial to attend the Unification Theological Seminary (UTS), which is now known as HJI (HJ International Graduate School for Peace and Public Leadership). At the time I was meeting with Christian Clergy and also representatives of different cultures and religions and believed additional study would help in my ability to communicate. UTS was offering relevant courses, such as the study of the Old and New Testament, a study of faith traditions and Unification Philosophy. I was grateful when accepted into UTS in 1994.
HJI is currently located in Manhattan but at that time, the campus of UTS was in Barrytown, New York. Living on campus was a wonderful opportunity to develop relationships with fellow students and a good opportunity for discussions with professors. It was also a beautiful natural environment on the banks of the Hudson River. It was a wonderful environment for prayer and meditation. It was also a place where the founders, Rev. and Mrs. Moon had visited on many occasions. During my time there, we had opportunities to meet Rev. and Mrs. Moon directly. Studying at UTS, Barrytown was a memorable experience in my life of faith, and also a place where I could develop a deeper relationship with God.
It was with regret that I couldn’t continue my studies at UTS at that time, due to our family leaving the area. I did keep in mind that I would continue in the future. It was 27 years later that I received inspiration to continue at HJI. HJI had developed an online program which enabled me to participate, as I was residing in Australia. I reapplied and the courses I had taken in the past were still part of the curriculum. In other areas of study this may not have been possible, but because of the essence of religion and philosophy, the courses were still relevant.
Since 1994 HJI has expanded the curriculum in numerous areas and now has a degree in Peace Studies. Since returning, I have taken some very interesting courses with the best professors. I am so grateful for the opportunity to continue at HJI. Through studying, I could continue to develop a deeper understanding of various subjects, leading to more awareness and development of character. I would like to contribute, together with others of like mind, to bring positive change in a world that needs many people working together, with an understanding of how to overcome conflict and bring peace.
If applicable, share about the benefits of your online learning experience
Without online learning I would not be able to study at HJI. The HJI online learning with the use of Canvas, Populi and Zoom has brought the classroom to us in our homes. It may not be quite the same as face to face interaction between students, professors and classmates in the classroom, but it provides so much of what is necessary to learning. We still have face to face interaction on Zoom, and interaction between students and professors on Canvas. The presentations presented by the professors are equal to those given in the classroom. Online learning enables students from around the world to study at the school of their choice regardless of location. I am grateful to HJI for the online learning program.
Is there any other highlight or aspect of your study at HJI that you would like to share?
At HJI there are the best professors who are experts in the fields that they teach. They are not only teaching, but researching and developing their field of expertise, bringing it to higher levels. They are also interactive in the classes, and depending on the course, some professors involve their students in discussions regarding development.
