Alumna Spotlight – Mika Deshotel

Mika Deshotel | Doctor of Ministry, 2025  | Bridgeport, Connecticut

What inspired you to apply to HJI and your program? What do you most appreciate about being a student at HJI?

I began taking classes as a non-degree student in 2020 during the height of the pandemic. I was a pastor and saw this as my chance to receive formal religious education to better serve my community. Later, in 2022 when I completed my time in full-time ministry, I felt called to apply for the DMin program, as a next step for me to increase my capacity to serve God in a bigger way.

I think I appreciate HJI as a place for like-minded individuals who want to make a real difference in their respective spheres of influence. I’ve also really appreciated the faculty, in their extensive knowledge of their fields of expertise, but also in their ability to help create spaces for relevant dialogue and discussion.

Is there any other highlight or aspect of your study at HJI that you would like to share?

I have found HJI to unexpectedly be a healing place for me, especially once I stepped away from my role as a church pastor. I felt I was in an environment that helped me to reflect and digest my experience in a healthy way so that ultimately I could give back in a greater capacity once I complete my degree.

What do you enjoy in your free time?

I enjoy being out in nature, taking long walks along the beach. I like discovering new places with my family and eating good food. I also love coffee shops and spending time there, chatting with friends.
