HJI Adjunct Professor\, Dr. Claude Perrottet will be speaking on “How Positive is (Galtung’s) Positive Peace?” Dr. Keisuke Noda\, HJI Associate Provost\, will be the emcee for the evening. \nThe concepts of Positive Peace and Negative Peace\, popularized by Johan Galtung\, have dominated the discourse of Peace Studies over the last few decades. Even the newcomer quickly understands that Positive Peace refers to peace as “more than the absence of war.” But what that “more” consists of is less obvious. Establishing social equality and justice\, economic equity\, ecological balance\, civil peace and more have been suggested as key requisites. The program will conclude with Q&A from the audience and comments from HJI Provost\, Dr. Thomas Ward. \nThe modern formulation of free market economics has consistently yielded unprecedented creativity\, productivity\, and wealth. Yet is this system optimal for maximizing a broad distribution of prosperity? Or can reforms be made\, within the free market system\, such that future prosperity will be less disproportionately concentrated in the hands of an economic and political elite? \nAlan Jessen’s presentation is Part II of a discussion on achieving economic democracy congruent with Unificationist ideals of “interdependence and mutual prosperity”. SUMMARY:Faith\, Interfaith and the Search for Peace
DESCRIPTION:Bishop MunibYounan\, former president of the Lutheran World Federation\, and a president of Religions for Peace\, is a Sunhak Peace Prize Laureate\, honored for his many decades of service to the promotion of ecumenical and interreligious dialogue and cooperation. A Palestinian Lutheran based in Jerusalem\, Bishop Younan has been instrumental in promoting Lutheran-Catholic dialogue and reconciliation\, culminating in an historic meeting with Pope Francis. His work throughout the Middle East has earned the respect of millions as he has built bridges among Christian\, Jewish\, Muslim and Druze populations. \nOur program will include several additional panelists\, along with a group of graduate students from UTS\, engaged in exploring with Bishop Younan the important relationship between religion and peace\, highlighting the importance of interreligious dialogue as an instrument of promoting mutual respect\, understanding and recognition of shared values and ideals. \nRegister here.
